How Personal Color Analysis Has Saved Me Thousands

I used to shop with no plan and waste money on clothes I never wore. Then I discovered personal color analysis—and my Winter Color Season changed everything about how I shop and dress.

Let’s talk about something a little embarrassing: I used to shop like I was trying to solve an identity crisis with a cart full of Amazon Prime boxes. No plan. No strategy. No real sense of what I actually needed.

I’d scroll Instagram, see a cute outfit, hop over to Pinterest, maybe watch a haul on TikTok, and next thing you know… boom. Another random package on the doorstep. Another top I wasn’t sure how to style. Another dress that looked good online but… not so great on me.

I convinced myself that these impulse buys were all part of me “figuring it out.” Like, maybe this puff-sleeve dress would unlock a personality I didn’t know I had?

Spoiler: it didn’t.

Buying Without a Plan

I never used to stop and think:

  • Does this color actually look good on me?
  • Do I already own something similar?
  • Can I pair this with at least three other things in my closet?
  • Will I actually wear this more than once?

Nope. Just vibes and a credit card.

The Personal Color Analysis That Changed Everything

Then I got my personal color analysis done. (If you want the full story of that weekend, you can read about it here. Trust me, it’s worth it.)

It was eye-opening – and honestly, kind of freeing. I finally understood why so many of the clothes I had either sat untouched or made me feel “off” when I wore them: they just weren’t my colors.

At the end of the appointment, they handed me a little color wheel — a fan deck of swatches based on my season (I’m a Winter Color Season, in case you missed it). That fan deck became my secret weapon.

How I Started Shopping Smarter

Yes, I Was That Person

I started bringing the swatch book everywhere: Target, Old Navy, Lululemon — if I was shopping, my Winter Color Season swatches were in my bag, ready to be put to work.

I won’t lie: the first few times I stood in the middle of a store holding up a swatch book, I felt ridiculous. I imagined people wondering, “Is she matching paint samples to her leggings?”

But honestly? Who cares. I don’t know these people. I’ll never see them again. And more importantly, it works.

The more I used my color wheel, the easier it got. My eyes started to naturally recognize which shades worked and which didn’t. That army green or dusty rose I used to love? Not doing me any favors. But emerald or magenta? YES, PLEASE.

The Money-Saving Magic of Color Analysis

Here’s where the real magic happens: I now walk into a store and know immediately whether or not I’m even going to try something on.

Most stores follow seasonal color trends — and a lot of times, those trendy palettes don’t include any of my Winter Color Season shades.

Gone are the days of walking into Target for toothpaste and walking out with a jumpsuit, two tank tops, and a pair of earrings I didn’t need. I can walk through the clothing section with my kids, and instead of getting distracted, I keep moving.

And guess what? I don’t feel like my wardrobe is lacking. At all.

In fact, it’s the opposite. After almost a year of only buying things I love and that actually suit me, my closet is more functional – and more “me” than it’s ever been.

Was Personal Color Analysis Worth the Investment?

Without a doubt.

Yes, getting my colors done with House of Colour was an upfront cost. But when I think about how many pieces I’ve not bought, how many unnecessary returns I’ve avoided, and how much more I love the things I do own — it’s already paid for itself.

So if you’re someone who feels overwhelmed by your closet, tired of wasting money on clothes that don’t feel quite right, or you’re just looking for a way to shop smarter — personal color analysis might be exactly the reset you need.
